During cupping therapy, a practitioner will place special cups onto your skin to create suction; this pulls the tissue beneath the cups upwards and increases the flow of blood to the area. Cupping is thought to help draw out impurities, facilitate healing, and improve the body’s energy flow. You can choose to have dry cupping (which we’ve described above) or wet cupping, which involves puncturing your skin with sterile needles so that blood is physically drawn out through the suction process.
If you’re booking in with an experienced practitioner, you should expect to pay between $15 and $165 for your cupping treatment.
It depends on your goal and the condition you want to treat. You may initially be advised to have an appointment every 1-2 weeks, but ask your practitioner – they’re best placed to advise you on the session frequency based upon your body and its needs. For general wellness, you can have cupping therapy once a month. You should leave at least a week between appointments.
Cupping aims to eliminate toxins and clear blockages in your body’s energy flow. You’re likely to see this more physically if you opt for wet cupping, a process that punctures the skin with needles and applies the cups to draw out blood. It’s thought that wet cupping can help the kidneys remove heavy metals from your body.
Because the suction created by cupping draws blood to the skin’s surface, you’re likely to experience some discoloration or bruising. It will take anything from a few hours to two weeks for these to disappear completely. You can get rid of the marks more quickly by drinking water and resting.
